What venue(s) will be a part of the festival?
For 2020, we will be at the EXIT Theatre Main Stage. This is an 80 seat theater in downtown San Francisco. The Exit Theatre is conveniently located near public transportation (Powell MUNI/BART Station) and the 5th and Mission public parking garage. There are many hotels, shopping, and restaurants within walking distance.
Some additional workshops will be at Leela’s Training Center at the Chronicle Building, corner of 5th and Mission, and only about 3 blocks from the EXIT Theatre.
How much stage time will performers receive?
Improv and Sketch Ensembles will receive 25 minutes. FemCs, who act as hosts for each show block, will receive approximately 5 minutes total for their solo act and introducing the three acts.
What is the range of shows and styles the festival is seeking?
We are hoping to showcase a diversity of acts. We are open to short-form, long-form, small group ensembles (duos, trios), sketch, musical, and experimental. We are ideally looking for strong ensembles who practice the mission of this fest: “supporting the female voice – in all its flavors.”
What is the local improv scene like?
San Francisco Improv is very eclectic. There is a large diversity of style. From narrative, theatrical improvised plays to authentic, slice of life thematic long-form and duos, to fast paced short form, and comedy-driven Harolds. San Francisco is a city known for artistic risk-taking, social-political activist theatre, and experimentation.
What are the festival’s goals?
Our mission is to increase the visibility of womxn in all areas of improvised theatre. This fest builds comradery and a support system for womxn improvisors, creating long-lasting friendships and mentorship relationships. We will inspire the next generation of womxn improvisors to boldly go where no woman has gone before!
What are the selection criteria for this festival?
A polished package! We want to be able to see/hear you in your video and get a clear sense of the style of your show that you plan to perform. We also value experience and look for groups with a festival resume. Also, we do accept new young groups, or groups newly formed just for this festival. We want to create a diverse fest! We also expect the video to reflect the cast who will be performing at the festival. Please contact us about any cast changes.
What unique improv experiences will performers gain?
With acceptance into Femprovisor Fest, you will receive a festival performer pass to see ALL shows at the fest (if not sold out.) A performer discount will also be offered for festival workshops. You can join the San Francisco walking tour between Civic Center and the Painted Ladies, with picnic in Alamo Square Park, led by one of our producers, Dominica Malcolm. Additional social opportunities to connect with other improvisers, and potentially an opportunity to appear in Improvative Productions’ improv documentary.
